Performance X6 / X6 M spy pics

Never understood the CAFE requirement. Why mandate efficiency? One could mandate emissions (environmental reasons) or speed limits (safety reasons of others), but mandating efficiency is somehow doesn't sound American of free market.

Take this for example:
- When the prices of gas went up, people drove less, and found their own ways to be efficient. They complained at first, but as always people managed to adapt. (4 days work week, less polluting cars, car pooling, living closer to work... etc)
- If a 60 MPG cars become a reality people will drive more, more emissions, and more congestion on the highways.

Let the market take car of itself... Am I missing something here?

The danger is when you get to a point where everything stops. If we let the market 'take care of itself' people will get to a point when they say I can't.

Example: Diesel gets to $10 per gallon. Major trucking companies say they can't run anymore. Food shortages, mass chaos, panic....

I also gave a friend a good example yesterday. To save gas, he bought a scooter. OK, so what is he accomplishing?

1) he makes it difficult for car drivers on two lane roads. It can go 50 mph, but some people have a hard time with distance and do not think they can pass these slow movers
2) he is causing more greenhouse gases! The Toyota Matrix he normally drives gets 30mpg, and he is getting 60 with the scooter. It has no cats, so it emits around 4 times the CO2!
3) his own safety is at much higher risk.

We have to mandate efficiency because it pushes technology. Without the mandates, the auto companies would just pocket the R&D money.

I think BMW's recent agreement with Fiat / Alfa is for CAFE reasons, but that's just my opinion.

Not to hijack the thread, but:

I am not sure we'll ever reach that point of complete halt. Not to get too technical, Gas is not cigarettes or alcohol it does not have an in-elastic supply and demand curve. You raise the prices of cigarettes and alcohol; people will complain but will not quit it or reduce their consumption (hence these are the highest taxed goods). You raise the price of gas to $4 here in the US and people complained at first, but later changed their behavior and gas consumption went down.
-People are driving less
- US airlines that are one of the most mismanaged industries are trying to be efficient.
- Congress is looking into regulating speculator bedding on oil contracts (I heard that it account to $30-60 of the oil barrel cost form an email I received from my frequent flyer airline).
- More $$ is going into investing into alternative fuel since it makes good business sense.

All of these changes are good ones that resulted from the higher gas cost not CAFE.

This market by itself (without government involvement) created a good environment for small and fuel efficient vehicles. At the same time Hummer is up for sale!!

An example of good government involvement, emission regulations in CA, forced the hand of Euro manufacturers to innovate and come up with clean diesel. Performance was not compromised and the environment did benefit. That is regulations I can believe in

PS. I think you might be right about BMW's collaboration with fiat being caused by CAFE. However, one could argue that such collaboration is not because mini is not fuel effecient, it could simply be that BMW does not want to invest too much time and money in developing a platform just for the next generation mini.

Although BMW still won’t confirm the M version of the X6, the side vents and dual exhaust on each side give away the true identity of this not-so-mild-mannered X6.

Built to compete with Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo S, Mercedes ML63 AMG and other high-performance crossovers – the X6 M may very well be in a class of it’s own.

Rumours have it the X6M will be powered by the M5’s 5.0-litre V10 with 373kW and 520Nm of torque. We’re expecting BMW to make an official announcement about the X6 M before the end of the year.

Looks like a bigger lip at the point the rear hatch meets the rear bumper.The rear bumper/fascia appears to be heavily cammo'ed.That might be the reason for the bigger lip.Short of the front and rear fascia's,whatever is taped on the side,and exhaust tips.... and what's under the hood.....the exterior of this X6 appears pretty stock.Had my best contact at the plant pigeon holed last night.....was set to ask him about "M's" new X3 etc.....as luck would have it he had to take a phone call.I'll catch him again when he's walking his dog.Thanks!
