change the oil

Hi my name is Slavo,
I got X5 2007 V8
There is just 8,000 miles, my dealer called me to come and .change the oil
When should the oil be changed?
Do I have to go to a dealer($300) or can I go to my mechanic($60)? The price is going to be a lot different for the same quality of oil and filter.
thanks

Slavo,
Let's recall you had ~7,000 miles way back in Oct. '07...now you have
8,000 miles here in June.

My guess is the Stlr is trying to sell you an "in between" oil change for
Three Hundred Freakin Dollars, , or it may be time for your "low
mileage annual oil change".

If you have had the car 12 months, you should be able to wrangle a
free "annual oil change" for low mileage drivers, unless BMW has changed
or dropped that part of the maintenance.

I'd pass on that rip off offer of 3 Bens for an oil change...

If the Stlr won't/cannot do an annual freebie, do the Indie route.
And, take the sumbitch out for a drive once in awhile.

The free oil changes, while under the free maintenance/warranty period, are limited to:

(1) When the service indicator says it is time for an oil change (usually around 15,000 miles), or,

(2) if 12 months have passed since the last oil change.

Any oil changes beyond that are the owner's personal choice and cost.
