do you think BMW will ever recalled the poor image backup camera

I love everything in the 08 x5 4.8 except for the back up camera. It is awful. the picture is poor and night image is a joke. It is worst than a $20 internet camera. I think BMW should recalled the camera, and put in a better build quality camera. What do you all think? I can't believe they will let that leave the production line with this poor quality camera on a $70K car. What a joke! I hope BMW is reading this.

I think we're all on the same boat. We need to make more of a collective noise on this. I said once before I ordered the car that people are settling for this solution because it's better than nothing. At least daytime is majority of the functional day, right? Unfortunately for us, BMW is getting these orders for them on most X5s and may not see a real problem.

At delivery, I asked my dealer if he heard of such complaints and he said no with a puzzled look.

heh....ask why they were putting cassette decks in the old e53 nav platforms.
It is what it is sometimes with these things.

Where doe the nav camera sit on the E70 platform ? I don't have the model handy but Sanyo makes a kicka$$ for about $250.

I like the camera. For backing up purposes, I don't expect outstanding video quality (that's not the purpose) but I expect it to be good enough to see where I'm going. So far, that's what I get. It's such an improvement over having no camera at all.

I agree, they do need to make the back-up camera quality better. Even the BMW sales person was embarrassed to show me the back-up camera.

Judyd: I would agree only if the camera quality was just the same as other manufacturers, but that is not the case, I have seen better quality in less expensive vehicles.

Agreed...this camera makes my Pioneer radio's camera look like progressive HD...And it can even see in the dark too...although it doesn't pan up and down...

Isn't that a weird message on your display though?
"CAUTION SCREEN IMAGE MAY APPEAR REVERSED"!

Isn't the image either reversed or normal??? How would it change sometimes?

BMW will not recall the camera, as BMW does not like to spend money on recalls. It is hard enough to get them to agree to safety and reliabilitiy recalls, much less to address something like a less than perfect backup camera.

BMW handles customer satisfaction on a case by case basis using the squeaky wheel theory -- only the loudest wheels get any grease.

I think it's for the people that think on the left side of the brain versus the right More less just to cover their butts(Pioneer).

The problem with camera's low-res and low light sensitivity is compounded by very small and ineffective reverse white lights. So unless BMW redesigns the tail lights and adds brighter reverse lights, it is unlikely camera's upgrades will help at all!

BTW, I have no complains about the camera in the day light. It is quite OK. At night, there is a different story though. And it is slow to turn on, too - that one I'd rather have a fix for ASAP !
