Now that does need to be fixed... I role nearly five feet from the time I stick into reverse, before anything is displayed on the cam

Otherwise, I can live with the poor quality...

try unlocking the doors way before get into the car..the iDrive will load up by the time you back out.

I have confort access, and the doors only get open when i grab the door handle. the camera does show up late but it works when i need it.

Judy,
Nobody is expecting "outstanding" quality in a backup camera, what we do expect is a camera that is of a quality relative to the cost of the vehicle. The camera is a piece of crap, BMW should be ashamed. Better cameras are found in vehicles costing 1/2 or less what the E70 cost. We are not talking about an expensive proosition here, a good quality camera is very cheap. The camera is worthless at night and barley passable during the day.

SHAME ON YOU BMW!

I disagree, how can a Toyota have a better image camera than a BMW. This is nonsense. We spend our money on a BMW, because of the quality, handling and safety. the daytime image is ok, but can you see anything at night??? at night is like no camera.

only those who have owned an E53 with reversing camera will know how bad the E70 reversing camera is, whether its day or night, the difference is significant.

If the E70 is all people know about then dont waste anymore time debating about the quality because those who have not owned the E53 will have no idea.

If anyone of you own, or know someone who owns the Lexus RX350 or RX400h or a Mercedes S550/S63/S65...check out their reverse cameras in action. They are crystal clear, and at night (the Benz espcecially) the image is night vision sharp.

I was literally shocked the first time I used my backup camera in my 08' 4.8i. During the day it is somewhat slow to engage, and the picture quality is "so-so". OMG, at night it is totally useless, and honestly embarassing if I have anyone in the car with me. I paid almost $70,000 for my X5, and regardless if this camera is "just an option"...it should be at least as good, or better than in a $45,000 Lexus/Toyota!!

btw, i've noticed on several occasions on the bimmerfest boards that BMWNA reps actually chime in on issues, or ask you to contact them via phone. It should be brought up there as well in my opinion... don't see too many similar complaints about the backup camera there, but there should be...

It's not unusual. A Ford Focus has a better Ipod/phone interface with Sync, GM has a better system with On-Star than BMW Assist, etc. BMW has great engines, handling, etc., but tyically is behind the curve on most electronics stuff. I think it may be due to their long-standing preference for European electronics suppliers/developers.

The backup camera on my old 2006 Infiniti QX56, puts the camera on the X5 to shame! Awesome image day or night on the Infiniti. Too bad I can't say the same about my new X5.
