Transmission Fluid
My transmission is being rebuilt at a local shop, and they are going to fill it with standard ATF. Any opinions on this? I was going to maybe leave it in untill next tans oil change, or a couple weeks or so to make sure the tranny's working fine. That way I won't waste all that expensive oil in case it has to be ripped off again... So my options so far are:
1) Put in the OEM oil now 2) Drive it for a couple weeks than change oil 3) Oil is ok untill next oil change Thanks |

Which year model? Ordinary Dex III will not work with any of the BMW trannies. Depending on which tranny you could use synth Dex III for some and only OEM or equivalent for others.

I rebuilt my ZF 5HP24 transmission with DexIII no issues. Only difference is that it will have to be changed more frequently. Every 30,000 vs 100,000, I feel much better about this anyway. It costed me $34 for 20 Liters and seeing as how you'll be changing the other fluid at $30/liter there is no way even the long life fluid would be cheaper, although it is better, it is all personaly preference, but DexIII will be no issue.

I talked to ESSO and they said they will be replacing the LT 71141 with a new product. So any trans fluid is fine? Should I go with a synthetic one maybe?

Why not use what BMW specifies?

Use it if you want to, however if you are looking for an alternative at 1/20th the cost some people would like to know. I used syntheitic, but I now use normal DexIII as I maintain my transmission more regularly anyway. 100,000miles is way too much for any fluid.

Pipes -
I've used both fluids I'm going to mention for at least 20k Miles Esso Audi Equivalent I believe ran me about $11 qt. Probably going to need around 8 qts. If it was me, I would go with the Amsoil Atf. I have this in the X and trannys still fine. Curious...how much is the rebuild costing ya ? |
