Used X5 prices in the UK

Waht has happened.

Went to a BMW dealership to trade my 05 4.8is in for a 325d.

It only has 20000 miles on the clock, and I paid £49995 for it Sept 2005.

They will only give me £17000 for it.

The government has a lot to answer for with the new road tax scheme. it would appear nobody wants these cars anymore. Well, not second hand anyway.

For £17000 I would rather keep it and run it into the ground or if anyone here in the UK is interested you can have it for £20000

I bought a new and relatively loaded 3.0d Sport in September 05 - somewhere around £46k. It's now valued around £22k with 43,000 recorded miles and immaculate condition.
The road tax applied retrospectively is the killer: not only that it's going up by the pre-announced rates, but the threat that it will go up even further as (a) drivers with no alternatives are soft targets, and (b) the Govt has run out of money while helping drive the economy into recession.
I'm going to run my car into the ground and enjoy it while I can. It's a really good car - I'll drive it while quietly praying that this present shambles of an administration gets voted out next term and whoever comes in sees some sense. Big ask, eh?

Being an E53 doesn't help, E70 introduction knocked about 5 grand of the trade-in value of an E53 overnight. I was really disappointed with my trade-in on Xena II, when I bought Xena III. Like others, I intend keeping this one a lot longer than previously.

Just curious ...why don't you lease in the UK if you are going to hold on to a car for just a few years?

It's historical - personal leasing isn't that common in the uk (and is a relatively new service), company leasing is very common. The other issue is that even with big depreciation, until now it hasn't been that cost-effective. It has worked out cheaper to buy rather than lease. However with the big hits we are taking on depreciation now it is looking a much more attractive proposition.

As an example - when I traded in my 01 3.0i against Xena II, the trade-in value was nearly 70% after 3 years and 30000 miles - Xena II was only about 50% after 30000 miles. Current trade-in value of Xena III is about 60% after only 1 year and 10,000 miles.
