STEREO VOLUME GOING INTERMITTENTLY
Hello
I am having a problem with the sound from my stereo on my 2001 X5 with Sat nav. Sometimes after staring the car i will hear a pop (the best way to describe it) and all audio will be lost. The stereo functions and nav all continue to work, just no sound. The audio will return as randomly as it went and will work ok until next time i start the car. Any ideas please??!! Adrian |

I had a similar problem. Everything would mute then return of it's own accord. I found lot's of posts on google with users having the same issue. The fix "in my case" was to replace the radio control unit (under the spare wheel). Good luck. |

Thanks. I will check the boot floor for moisture and check connections at the radio module. I have also pulled and resert fuses 72/73as a precaution as suggested by others. See how things go.

Popping sound? Thats usually indicative of a blown speaker(s)...

speakers are fine, i have not heard the popping sound(this was reported by the wife!!) all i have noticed is the sound going away for a while then coming back on randomly. There is no water in this area. What do i need to check on the radio module?? Any other things to look for?

On mine I could make it go off by driving over a bump or somtetimes just shutting the tailgate. Leave the radio on and try pulling the unit or giving it a thump. If the sound goes then you know you are at the correct place.
FYI: BMW said on mine it could be the steering wheel and they wanted to replace that first, then charge me for a new wheel even if that was not the cause. But I noticed that the sound almost always went off after some vibration and most certainly if I slammed the tailgate shut. |

Could be bad connection/ loose solder inside the box. I'd suggest pulling the box and letting a good repair shop take a look, might be cheaper then replacing the box outright. Good luck!

On my radio when the sound went the radio station display would eventually change from the station name to the frequency. i.e. Radio 2 would display 97.xx
I also found other posters who had the exact same symptoms. I was convinced it was a loose mute wire shorting out somewhere. But if it was I never found it. Also that would not explain the frequency change on the radio. Pulling the box out and tapping it would make it go wrong. Best of luck. Please post what the problem if you ever find out. Bruce |
