'Knocking' in back area -02 X5

Every time I go over a bump in the road, I hear a clunk on the drivers side in the rear compartment. I've checked for anything loose...took everything out of the wheel well but still no luck. Sounds like it is coming from inside the rear hatch or tailgate. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Gary

I have a similar knock or "pop" noise in my 2000, but only when I have folks sitting in the rear seats. Never have figured it out.

Sure it's not the tailgate? I have that clunk and about every 10k miles I bring it to the dealer and tell them to change the tailgate bumpers. The sound goes away for another 10k. I do 10k about every four months, so the parts are covered under the 2-year parts warranty. Last visit all they did was lube the tailgate, so the sound is back already.

You stated that you emptied the wheel well. Do you mean that you also checked the spare tire well? If not, check that next. There might be something rolling around in there. We've had members find loose tools left by a mechanic or previous owner.

Good luck!

I've got the same knock! I'm about to replace the rear subframe (suspension) bushes as they are very warn (Mot Advisory). So I'll let you now in the next few weeks but it seems the logical explanation.

i'm glad that not the only one with this knock then!!

it really gets to me and i have lots my cool onmore than one occasion over this.

i took apart my rear tail gate to se if it was something inside, but all i could see was the latch was rubbing against a piece of metal of the tail gate, so i filled it down and it seemed to have worked for a few days but now it is back again. i'm going to strip it out again just to see if it is rubbing again.
