'Knocking' in back area -02 X5

My rear clunking noise ended up being an unseated spring.

I was hearing something from the back in my 01 X5 and I took some of the fuzzy part of 1/2 inch velcor and put it around the parts of the latch on the upper door. It is kind of V shaped and it slides into the bottom door latch...this keeps it tighter. you can also put some fuzzy stuff on the little rubber stops on each side. You have to slam the top door harder to get it to shut but it gets a tighter fit and it stopped the noise on mine.

Can you see any spot where the top door hits the bottom door. I had a little line where the paint was worn because they were hitting. I adjusted the rubber stop out a little as well as adding some of the fuzzy part of the velcor....look for the rub. If you have it adjust the rubber stop out a turn or 2.

I thought it was the spare tire and I put foam around all of the tools but it didn't seem to help....but you might check if the velcro doesn't work...

That's great advice I do the same thing every couple months I just put some new felt pads on the rubber hatch stops. I also removed my OE jack stand from the rear well....vualla the noises are gone.

One of the causes of the clunking noise is the top tailgate shifts when the the car body shifts. I noticed the noise even when I do not hit bumps also. The X5 body is just not rigid enough.

The good thing is that I was able to fix it and it only cost $2. the Bumpers for the top tailgate was a little worn and so I purchase rubber pads from lowes. It was used for the feet of chairs. I stuck one on each side and all clanking noises were eliminated. I have used it for several months and have not lost one yet. I keep the spares in the trunk just in case.

check your ball joints and control arm both sides...

had the same problem and took care of them... let me get you the part numbers...

they are parts of suspension...

ball joints should be
Part# : 31 12 6 756 491

and front control arms should be
Part# : 31 12 6 760 275



need to replace them ASAP... can be dangerous

Had the rear subframe (axle) bushes replaced (all 4) at Brabbs Motor Works in Leigh just outside Manchester (uk) £350 ($700)

what you need to do to open the trunck on each side there is rubber you need to put greese and no more noise
