Crankcase vacuum hose DIY document
Here it is, i was able to upload the document by increasing the image compression. It should be in this post as a PDF attachment.
I hope this helps anyone looking to do the repair, in the same way that all of you have helped me so many times before. thanks -stephX5 |

awesome! Surprised you didn't go for the manifold cover while you were back there. I guess taking the manifold off is no picnic

I forgot to mention that after repairing the oil separator/crankcase vacuum hoses my check engine light went out. Before the repair I had codes P1159 and P1161 showing up on my Actron scanner. After the repair the codes cleared within a few mins. and now my X5 is all clear.

I am not familiar with the 3.0 engine but quickly looking at it on realoem it seems lik eit might be much easier to access these hoses as one of them seems to connect just beneath the oil cap. That being the case it also seems that these hoses on the 3.0 are not under the smae amount of stress as they are on the 4.4i, simply due to their placement. But I am not sure about any of this just my assumptions from viewing the diagrams on realoem.com for the 3.0. Someone with a 3.0 will be better suited to help you out. Sorry I couldn't help more.

I replaced it on my 3.0i without removing the intake. You will need to remove everything down to the throttle body to get access to all of the screws holding it in, but it's still easier than pulling the manifold.

Didn't you have to take the oil separator out and clean it? It looks pretty "oily" from the pictures. I remember I saw it in another thread saying it has to be cleaned. If it needs to be off and cleaned, can you do it without taking the intake manifold off? |

Hi flyingmachine,
I did not remove the oil separator unit, I did however clean the top and the connections before installing the new hoses. I think if you are interested in completely removing the oil separator you may have to remove the intake manifold to gain access to the bracket that the oil separator is fastened to. I would have to double check this to make sure against the TID or Bentley to be sure but from what I can remember I believe this is the case. thanks -stephX5 |
