Custom Subwoofer Enclosure and Amp Installed
Today I completed a custom sub enclosure and amp install in the X5. I selected a pioneer shallow mount subwoofer which only requires a .3 cu ft enclosure! My fabricated enclosure is .39 cu ft so its above spec. I could of used an 8" sub, but I went for the 10". I used 3/4" MDF, glued and screwed After testing the enclosure at loud volumes I found that there was no buzzing or rattling - solid, like a rock! After mounting in the right side compartment, there was very minimal buzzing of the surrounding vehicle assemblies. All in all, I'm satisfied with the compartment fitting and sound.
As for the amp, I selected an MTX TC-3100 monoblock. This amp was just the right size to fit in the equipment compartment. It also has high level (speaker) inputs, auto turn on and off, and a remote bass level controller. All these features (except the remote level controller) are required to do this type of install. Speaker Info: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...oofers/Shallow Amp Info: http://www.mtx.com/caraudio/products...ers/TC3001.cfm If you are interested in installing this type of setup, see alpac's "HOW TO ADD SUBWOOFER AMP TO THE X5 FACTORY RADIO" on the home page of x5world or you can PM me anytime. The only real difference between my amp install and apac's is that I tapped the green terminal block (under the floorboard) for power to the amp. http://www.x5world.com/articles/x5/s...ctory-amp.html

how do you calculate the volume of odd shaped enclosures? I'm emulating the JL audio stealthbox in shape and size. I planned to use the same speaker that they do. The only differences would be the thickness of my enclosure..... in some places its 3/8th inch mdf and in some places its about 1/4th inch reinforced fiberglass.....

Cost / Time
MTX Amp about $150 w/ shipping:
http://cgi.ebay.com/MTX-AUDIO-TC3001...QQcmdZViewItem Pioneer shallow sub about $110 w/ shipping: http://cgi.ebay.com/10-inch-pioneer-...QQcmdZViewItem 2 sheets (2x4 ft) 3/4" MDF at Home Depot about $15 Quality wire for amp power, ground and speaker about $25 Glue, screw, brackets, zip ties etc less than $15 Total Cost: $315 About fabricating the enclosure - I created a cardboard 3D template and adjusted it so I could make the best use of the room in that compartment. After I was satisfied with the cardboard enclosure, crafting the actual enclosure was fairly easy. It took me about 5 hours to do the whole project, but I actually made 2 enclosures while I was at it! Lastly - It sounds great! Very clean bass that (to my ear) seems to match the system; which is a stock nav head unit, dsp and the BSW MB Quart 10 speaker upgrade (which I highly recommend) ![]() Last edited by zerochief : 09-02-2007 at 01:47 AM. |
