there are generally two types of brake pad noise. one comes from the pads rubbing the disc and is more of a grinding sound. the other, more common, sound is a high pitched squeal that comes from the pads vibrating against the pistons. this is exacerbated by brake dust gathering there.
i temporarily solve this problem on my other car (X doesn't squeal) by washing in there at a car wash. next time i change the brakes i'll put in anti-squeal pads.
you can put those pads on yourself if you're handy and can do a brake pad replacement. otherwise any brake shop could do it.

you can visually check the thickness of the rotors and pads. Do that to make sure its not them first.

on some cars, the back of the brake pad comes with a shim kit to minimize vibration when braking. Im sorry i have not worked on the x5 to confirm if this is it but this was a problem i fixed on toyotas and hondas when the dealer neglected to install these and squeeling was the result.

Alternatively you can remove the brakes and clean the excess brake dust that may have accumulated. spray brake dust cleaner liberally and reinstall the pads.

Yep, check the pads for thickness.
If it's plenty thick try hard braking a few times (do this on parking lot when it's save to do so). I found on mine that it squeals on light braking into stop due to glazing.
