Big Brake Kit upgrade?

It is less then 7Gs for sure. I have priced them out. Adding a BBK on a X5 is 90% show for sure. I have Brembos on my M3, and they look great, but are priceless at the track. So unless the X5 is seeing track duty, there will not be a huge diff in daily braking performance.

I am really familiar with Bav Auto. I just looked at their website again. Wuzin has an 05 4.4. and pricing was as follows for that year and model;

front kit $4,294.95
rear kit $2,994.95
total $7,289.90

Unless the phone rep gave you another price or they are running a special on big brake kits right now, I don't see how they are less than $7k. No big deal though. Even $6k is a lot for a big brake kit when the X is not going to be a track rat. I would most likely go with Stop Techs on front and more agressive pads on the stock rear rotors to get some extra performance and save the extra $3-$4k. Just my opinion, though.

On another note I think the front brakes on the 4.6 and 4.8 are bigger than the 4.4. Maybe you can get some calipers off of a 4.6 and bolt them onto your X with the 4.6 rotors. I am not 100% sure this can be done, but if it could it would increase your stopping power as well. Just an idea.

There are many many other places to get a Brembo kit then Bav Auto. IMO, their pricing is not great on anything.

4 Piston would be much better than stock calipers, which are single piston.

I have never heard of rotora before. I would personally go with the Brembos or Stop Techs if I were going to spend the money. They don't cost much more.

Here is what I could find on the stock X5 brakes;

front rotors 4.4 13.1 inch (332mm)
front rotors 4.6 14.0 inch (356mm)
back for both 12.8 inch (324mm)

60-0mph 4.4 128 ft, 4.6 117 ft.

I am pretty sure the 4.6 calipers would fit on the 4.4. If infact they can, the most economical way to go would probably be 4.6 calipers and rotors on the front with more aggressive pads all around. Otherwise, I would go with the Brembo or Stop Techs on the front and upgraded pads on the rear.

ok then, I would go with Stoptech (4 piston, 355mm/14inch),
since I don't want to spend extra money for new spare wheel and it looks like brembo only makes 18" brake kit for X5.

btw, drilled or slotted, which one perform better?

Yup, I've checked, but those 4 pistons are for the Rear fitment.

Rotora is based out of Taiwan. They don't make bad products actually. They are much more popular in Asian then in North America.

The 4.8is has a 355mm rotor and is a single piston set up, its a very large single piston.

As for slotted or drilled, since the car is not seeing track duty, I don't think it will make much diff. Some drilled rotors can develop small cracks. I had drilled rotors(Brembo) which saw 6 or 7 track days, plus every day use and had zero issues. So get which every you like the most. I would say get slotted if you are going to track it.

If you want a Brembo kit, I think you will need at least 19s to clear the fronts, as the rotor is 385mm and its a 8 piston set up. If you want good pricing, I can suggest a few ppl, there are a lot of good retailers in SoCal.

Stoptech kit is nice also, and their replacement parts are much cheaper then Brembos, but the kit is smaller overall, but Im sure it will perform just fine. The other added advantage here is that you will see some weight saving also, as Stoptechs are Brembos tend to be lighter then OEM systems which weight a ton. So it might help your steering also.
Dave Z is the man to see if you want the Stoptech kit.

The other option, if you are looking to just get some better performance. Contact Dave Z, and get some better pads, some SS lines, and better brake fluid. I did this the first week I picked up my 4.8is.
