Running Angel Eyes as daytime running lights

Running Angel Eyes as daytime running lights

Objective: To have the Angel Eyes work as daytime running lights.

I wanted to make this project as simple and economic as possible while keeping the option to revert everything back with minimal evidence.

Things you are going to need.

- A multimeter or a test light

- About 25 feet of wire

- Electrical tape

- Lighted Rocket switch

- Wire tap and connectors (male and female insulated quick disconnect terminals)

- Your every day set of screwdriver

You can find all this a your local Radio Shack

1- take off the foot well cover in the driver's side

2- Find a power source that is on only when the car is on and tap that wire (I got lucky and use one of the cables from the relay pack for the remote starter) do not power it up until you are done!

3- feed the power wire into the grommet by the driver’s side foot well

4-From the engine bay run the wire through the smaller grommet and to the diver’s side Angel Eyes

5-use females quick disconnect at the end of the cable to connect it to the Angels Eyes connector

.

6- feed the Ground (-) directly from the AE original power sours connector (brown wire)

This is how it should look after you run both wires to the AE

Installed

7- now you can tap that main power wire that you ran to the front to wire up the passenger side Angel Eye

8- Remove the wiper arms cover

9-Run the cable to the passenger side (make sure you don’t leave the cable loose, as it could get caught up with the wiper arms mechanism)

10 – run the wire through the small rubber grommet on the passenger side as you did on the driver side

11- Repeat steps #5 and #6

12-Now you can wire up the Lighted Rocket switch, make sure you get a good ground (-)

You can install the switch any where you want, I wanted to keep it out of the way so I installed it on the food well panel.

Switch wired up

Switch installed on the foot well panel

I added the switch because if at night the car is running and I don’t want to have any lights on I can just turn them off.

13-Now you can apply power and test everything before you close everything up, note that I wrapped all the wires with electrical tape so that it looks OEM

If everything worked ok know you can put it all back together.

Note the wires coming out on the edge of the cover, it` works well since the cover has a very thick rubber that accommodates the thickness of the wire!

Some pictures of the end result.

AE, Fog lights and park lights

Note:

-This was done to a 2002 face lifted X5.

-If you apply power to the positive (+) side of the original AE wiring harness it will feed power back to you Xenon lights that is why you have to disconnect it

- If you want and have the time you can retrofit the BMW European rear fog light switch to control the AE. Click on the link it show you how to do it
