It held up a little better than I thought it would have from the looks of that video, but the thing is that all the crumple zones were pretty much used in the Smart at that speed and the MB looked like it had plenty to spare. Also, did you see how the Smart actually started to go backwards? The safety cage seemed intact, but I wonder what forces were put on the occupants of the Smart? If the crumple zones were demolished, then a lot of force was put on the safety cage and thus the occupants of the Smart. The g-forces on the body would have had to be higher than in the MB.

At the end of the day, I would much rather be in the MB in that situation. Especially if speeds were elevated.

The smart car was designed with help from Pininfarina. The concept was to create a passenger cell within the structure of the car frame. The frame of the cell is deliberatley designed to be exposed, thus saving weight and adding interior space.

i think you guys are ALL forgetting one small thing!

we drive SUV's!!!
what if an SUV hit a smart car? ( or a similiar sized car like the fiat 500 and an suv like an audi q7)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pVF1Wr7GLQ

Also the E-class clearly showed that their passengers would be able to WALK again, whilst the smart car passengers need need legs!
