Teaching a new dog old tricks [modem burner]

Since Maggie has become an expert swimmer and clearly loves the water:

I have decided to increase the difficulty level of her tricks. I am attempting to teach Maggie how to dive down, to the bottom of the pool, and retrieve toys from the pool bottom.

It's hard to teach, but I have already accomplished a very difficult step 1. Which is submerging her head underwater:

More pictures to come once I teach her some more steps...

Great pics and cute dog!
You might want to make sure it's safe for her to do that, with the pressure at the bottom of the pool.

Don't quote me on this because i can't remember my source, but I believe a Portuguese Water Dog is "rated" to dive at least 10ft.

The dogs, when used for fishing in Portugal, used to catch fish underwater. So I know they can dive, but not sure how far down. I would assume the dog would stop at a level of discomfort..

For your viewing pleasure, here are some videos I found of dogs diving.. It's pretty damned cool..

BARK team members feature Portuguese Water Dogs who retrieve home run balls that land in McCovey Cove, the body of water adjacent to Pacific Bell Park. During every Sunday home game, these talented canines will work from boats and dive after splash hit baseballs that land in the water during batting practice and the game.

It's always nice seeing pictures of your dogs. Good luck with the training.

Now THAT will be something to see! Of course, hot dogs are a very tempting treat to even the most sophisticated pooch!
