Gas Saving Gizmos & Delusions

Maybe we need a new Forum:
"WildAzz & Wishful Thinking Mileage Improver Gizmos"...

Maybe shorten the Forum Heading to
W2TMIG or, Dream On MPG Stuff.

... Ya'll gotta be kidding.

On the topic of fuel consumption, I was disappointed in the new Toyota Corolla I had as a rental for a day. It had all the on-board computer functions of a BMW (!) including instant fuel consumption. It's surprisingly thirsty even with my delicate throttle inputs. I only averaged 31,4mpg (7,5l /100km) on mostly highway drives and no excessive speeds. I think the over-sensitive throttle calibration has something to do with this.

Hey amacman, I've been called a lot of things but a pedant is a new
addition to my personal collection of nick names...you could email me via
my profile. I did get your PM but the pdf links were broken...cut&paste
would have saved you some trouble, but I did do some noodling on the
web about the "run your car on water" delusion... ...

Nice pipe dream and pages of sites that exhort the same crap; here's
a link of just one page worth of sites that poke holes in the idea, however:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Run+your+car+on+water&start=10&sa=N

No arm wrestle, but it's beyond physics to make it work.

Have fun, though.

And, another link to cheer up my fellow Scots:

Yes, you can run a car on water. You need electricity to produce hydrogen from water and then run a combustion engine on the hydrogen or a combination of hydrogen and gasoline.

Yes, it will save on gasoline. No, it will not cost less to run.

The energy gained by burning the hydrogen can never be more than the energy input to break up water molecules in the first place. Any MPG improvements is just short term as the energy from the battery is drained to produce the hydrogen. Eventually the battery will need to be recharged and all the savings go out the window. If you account for the efficiency losses of the additional conversions in the system you end up paying more.

No free lunch.
