Is anyone watching "Generation Kill" on HBO?

Two episodes in and it is damn good! Ed Burns and David Simon have another hit on their hands. Only if they could get an Emmy win for their writing. "The Wire" got snubbed yet again!

I caught the season opener and have yet to watch the recorded second episode. I'll need to get into the meat of the program before I give it a thumbs up but so far not bad.

I personally find the series offensive. I'm familiar with the book in which Wright refers to our troops as America's first generation of "disposable children." Also alleging that this generation of troops were raised more on internet pornography than they were their own parents. Minute by minute (I feel) the series is attempting to show how desensitized the troops are to war, and killing, in an effort to show how terrible it is that we went to Iraq, and how the men and women serving there do not know any better. In short, it is a series about war that degrates our armed forces.

Zs,

Doesn't just about every movie made about war degrate our armed services? Except of course for "Saving Private Ryan".

But think about Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill, The Caine Mutiny, Jar Head, 3 Kings, etc.

In almost every war movie, there is a very human and flawed aspect to the soldiers, which often is designed to show, these are young boys capable of making mistakes that may haunt them forever or cost them their lives. It also humanizes them, showing the audience, they are people, imperfect in design and function and action.

In other words, you can't really make a war movie where everyone is perfect, unless of course, your name is Spielberg

It is the imperfection of the soldiers that allow the audience to identify with them, not the other way around.

I don't think it degrates the armed forces. If anything, it shows multiple facets of personalities... real people.

Every Ed Burns and David Simon project from The Corner, Homicide: Life on the Streets, and The Wire started out as contorversial projects... only to gain critical acclaim. In the end, I don't think Generation Kill will be any different. Burns and Simon seem to tell every story straight...no chaser. IMO, they are responsible filmmakers.
