To proclaim that you would have to know the origin of both words.

Yup. There goes the lingo for hard drives also. Check any documentation for multi-drive machines where one drive controls another: Master/Slave.

Now if the documents said the White drive controls the Black drive, then there would be a big issue. Last I checked in history there were no requirements that a master has to be any color - it's a control thing.

the other day, I was told that the use of that term was offensive.

my response: "I am offended that someone is offended by a technical term describing a piece of equipment. They are forbidden from being in my OR and working my cases, because that is offensive to me."

that ended there.

The article is garbage... a "non starter." But Eric, your comment made me think of this little rhyme:

Black cat is bad luck, bad guys wear black
Musta been a white guy who started all that
For those little white lies
My expression to the mountainous blue eyes
Then form a face, and shake my skull cap
Dismiss the myth, that evil is not black
but opposite spectrum, this done by red man
with horns on his head, laid down the ill plan
Got all his helpers, said, "Make it snappy!
Tell all the people that their hair can't be nappy!"
Blonde and blue-eyed, or dark-skinned half a G
A disease, created by leprosy
Don't speak of bleach, bend them to right
Say, "It was night WAY before the light"
Put aside spooks, Serch leaves a trace
I've set em correct with the effect of the Gas Face

It has always bothered me that in pool, the white ball hits all the colored balls and puts them in a hole. You win the game when you sink the black ball. It made me stop playing pool.

But I get confused when it comes to golf and baseball because in those activities you hit a white ball. I am so confused!

Wow, interesting. I never knew that the word "slave" was an exclusive, derogatory term that offended black americans.

It's a good that no other groups in history were ever enslaved. Cause, could you imagine the rucus if native americans were enslaved, or jews for that matter, or some young asians who are trying to work their way free in america. If that were true, than the world would really have a reason to stop using the word slave.

btw, I have decided because of "Kristallnacht" http://www.ushmm.org/outreach/kristall.htm I am offended by both the words, glass and night. Please stop using them or I will call the antidefamation league.

Accountants should stop using "in the black" to mean profitable and "in the red" to mean unprofitable. I also find it offensive that "yellow" is associated with cowardice.

Here's the article Laura was refering to:

Toddlers who turn their noses up at spicy food from overseas could be branded racists by a Government-sponsored agency.
The National Children's Bureau, which receives £12 million a year, mainly from Government funded organisations, has issued guidance to play leaders and nursery teachers advising them to be alert for racist incidents among youngsters in their care.
This could include a child of as young as three who says "yuk" in response to being served unfamiliar foreign food.
The guidance by the NCB is designed to draw attention to potentially-racist attitudes in youngsters from a young age.

I actually have a friend who is originally from South Africa and is caucasion... she can't put "African American" on any paperwork without getting in some kind of sh*t. Yet she actually is what would be correctly described as just that. Unlike alot of todays black Americans who don't even have historical ties to Africa, much less were ever citizens there. Political correctness is what I see as one of the biggest problems in America today! (other than poor politics)

Correct. People who are "white" do not truly have white skin, and the term caucasian was first used to describe people who had the characteristics of "lightness" "beauty" and being "handsome".
I myself try to avoid saying "black" because nobody really has black skin, and I grew up with a negative connotation of the word. African-American is the term I usually end up using, but as weasel said, it doesn't really make sense either.

lol.

I am offended that so many people get offended over things. The P.C. BS needs to stop. It really is out of control.

African American makes no sense at all in most cases. If anyone traces their ethnicity back far enough it will surely take them somewhere outside the U.S. For instance, I am part Irish, Hungarian and Polish, so am I an Irish Hungarian Polish American? If I am and there isn't an Irish Hungarian Polish American box to check on any forms I am required to fill out then I am going to be offended. I shouldn't be subjected to checking "other". Also, I request an Irish Hungarian Polish channel on TV, a magazine and so on. Oh, and if any of you make any Polish light bulb changer jokes, it is going to offend me. All of this is just rediculous. I don't really see what ethnicity has to do with your American citizenship.

I am not black and someone who is can chime in with how they personally feel, but to me calling someone African-American sounds really dated and offensive compared to calling them black.

Black Hole could be offensive if you are talking about African-American hookers I guess. Pretty dumb because before this post it would have never crossed my mind to think about how it could be misused.
