I'd say China is a much more likely posibility. For some reason, Americans are easily manipulated into believing that the rest of the world is some big anti-American conspiracy, and that any country or group that does not like America will automatically give support to any other country or group that also does not like America. As was said above, the politics of this region is very complex, and to suggest that Iran is now selling weapons to the Taliban is the most rediculous thing I've ever heard. Iran is easily the MOST anti-Taliban country in the entire world. When the Taliban were in power in Afghanistan, Iran was the largest supplier of arms to the Northern Alliance who were waging a civil war against the Taliban. Have you seen how well the Sunni and Shiite Muslims get along in Iraq? Well, Al-Queda and Taliban are Sunni, Iran is Shiite. They do NOT like eachother. When the Taliban were in power, there were only 3 governments in the entire world that recognized them as a legitimate government and had diplomatic ties with them: Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. I'd guess that the weapons are probably coming from China via Pakistani inteligence. Musharraf may talk a good enough storm to satisfy the media, but his country is still very much Taliban supporters.

Interesting article, since we were just talking about this:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/wo...afghan.html?hp The Afghan cabinet accused the Pakistani Army and premier intelligence agency, the Inter Services Intelligence, or ISI, of being behind a recent spate of terrorist attacks in Afghanistan and announced it was suspending three scheduled bilateral meetings with Pakistan. In a resolution after its weekly meeting, the cabinet blamed the ISI and the Pakistan army for the April assassination attempt on President Hamid Karzai, the beheadings of several Afghan citizens by militants in Pakistan’s tribal areas, suicide bombings and the recent execution of two women in Ghazni province. |
