Rhetorical questions on Iowa...
A reader from the Wolverine State [Michigan] writes:
Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods? Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved the problem asking where the FEMA trucks (and trailers) are? Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in Chicago ? When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines ? Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks? Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets? When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild "Vanilla Iowa", because that's the way God wants it? Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of cannibalism? Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people? How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again? So, where in the hell is Sharpton when Iowa needs relief? |

In Iowa/Missouri/Illinois, there are no victims. They are hard working folk who've been dealt a bad hand. Their farms will go on and again be passed to the next generation.
There is a support system in place that is much more effective than the Federal Government - The Red Cross, Churches, and your everyday Midwesterner. In St. Louis, the local TV stations run a banner on the lower edge that gives instructions on where to go or who to call to volunteer to help sandbag or provide general assistance to our neighbors to the north. Yesterday, the banner said there were enough volunteers in the towns, please stand by. They had all the assistance they could need. That's how we get it done. |

I wonder though, if that is a result of earlier failures by the Fed. Govt (playing devils advocate here). Although, I know years ago when two water born tornadoes hit our area when we were vacationing in New England I was shocked at how everyone came out to help each other out, it was amazing. Everyone was going door to door asking if anyone needed anything. Everyone was working together to clear the roads to get to a highway. Power was gone for 2 weeks, but everyone pulled it together. |
