Possibly scammed again on eBay...

I really need some advice on this one, please - I haven't learned my lesson on eBay yet. Some of you can recall my recent eBay purchase where I detailed the play-by-play on this forum after purchasing 4 OEM wheels and receiving 3 OEMs and 1 replica...

This time, I'm the seller, and I need advice. I recently sold my vintage Sony Discman D-555, ebay item 270244706068. The buyer paid me quickly, and, like me, has 100% feedback (8). I was about to go to FedEx and drop off the Discman, when I received this email from another eBay member:

"Beware of the winner -- he got my D-555 (Item number: 290217930576) played for 3 weeks, then claimed that the player cannot read disc and filed a full refund on PayPal. Unfortunately the PayPal really granted him a full refund!!! He opened up my D-555 and properly changed something inside. He won another one D-555 (Item number: 160248113367), hope he is not doing this on purpose. You know, it is hard to find parts on D-555 today. Good luck! "

So, I have his money, and I still have the Discman, which I need to drop off soon. I was thinking of videotaping the Discman working, next to a current newspaper, then packing it up and shipping it, or just refunding his money, and add him to my blocked bidder list.

Any thoughts are appreciated,

greg

Yes, this is a bit of a tough one to call. Less than 10 feedback scores is pretty low.

Based on his most recent feedback, which is positive, he seems to buying a couple of Discman's. The positive feedback is from sellers with pretty high seller counts so I would tend to trust their positive feedback.

My two cents...

Sounds like a good plan to cover yourself but it is even something you need to worry about? If you got paid, send the item working, he complains to PayPay, is there any negative repercussion on you? Does PayPal/eBay get involved in these situations to the extent that they'd contact the seller and try to resolve the dispute?

Seems to me that you're covered in any event.

Persona - I think if a complaint is filed with PayPal, they can take the money out of your bank account, and hold it in limbo while they investigate for 30 days - that is my fear, plus possibly receiving damaged goods back from the buyer after takes parts out for his needs. It becomes me vs him issue.

I would absolutely videotape it working. Sounds suspicious to me, too. Don't ever hesitate to make sure you're safe, just in case.

Also, now sellers can't leave negative feedback against buyers. A load of BS. I just had the same thing happen to me. I wanted to fly to California and just see what a moron the guy was in person.
SHIP IT INSURED.

I'm in no rush to get the money, considering the hassle I may be in for. What would happen if I refund the money, log it into ebay is "item has changed" or some crap like that, then relist it. I'd rather have it go to someone who will appreciate it, rather than this butcher. All of a sudden, he's buying up all rare Discmen, and inflating the prices significantly too..

I would be upfront with the buyer and email him you were contacted by one of his previous sellers warning you that you could be scammed. Tell him you have video taped the unit working just prior to shipment, and if he attempts to scam you that you will report him to eBay, PayPal, the FTC and his local authorities. I think that will be enough to keep him in line.

I would bow out of the deal. As a seller, I've been scammed several times and yes paypal will remove the money from your account. I'd contact him and tell him the item is no longer avail. for sale, refund his money, add him to blocked buyers, and relist. my 2c

Great, idea UCrew - here is what I sent him, in hopes that being upfront and honest will work out for everyone:

"As with all my auctions, I've just finished videotaping the D-555 working for over 30 minutes, and me packing it up for shipping out. I do this to protect you and myself. I'm sure you'll like my D-555.

Now, please tell me what happened to your previous D-555 purchase, and why you had to make a PayPal claim after using it for 3 weeks.

Greg"
