Question
The thing about gay marriage that concernes me is this:
If civil union truly provided all the same rights legally as marriage, would it still be important to have gay unions recognized as a marriage? My belief is that the battle for the use of the word marriage has overshadowed the battle for domestic rights. I do believe many people accept that same-sex couples should share the legal rights of traditional marriage. Despite the legal connotation of the word marriage, marriage to a large portion of this country, is very much a matter of religion. My gut reaction is the leaders in gay community may have won a battle, but they are losing the war on gaining domestic partner rights. So which is more important...the word or the rights? |

Everything on this earth take time to recover from damage. From organic matter (bodily injury), economic fluctuations (recessions, depression, etc) to emotion injury. To say that African-American or Gays should just "get over" is silly. Just 40 years ago Martin Luther King was asasinated. Just 40. Has the climate changed? Of course! Are things better, of course! But there are still things wrong and injustices happening everyday. And sometimes problems caused by someone else, are harder to correct then problems you caused solely. This statement is simple silly and a bit insultive, in my opinion. Although I'm sure it would get big laughs at the comedy store. |

Rights are rights. Agreed! So does that mean the rights of coal miners is the same as homosexual, women's or racial rights? This is where this argument is truly flawed to me. Even within the gay community there was racial discrimination. An African-American gay man, at one time, could not go to a white gay club no matter now discrete. This fact alone separates the gay African-American experience from a white gay experience. The African-American experienced a different level and depth of discrimination as the only difference was one... Race... So how can you now equate the fight for racial rights as the same as homosexual rights?? It is inherently not the same fight. The agruement that both rights are equal in importance, I agree with! But just because they are both equal in importance, does not mean that were the same fight. They were most definitely not!! |

Try to lighten up and stop assuming everything has a deeper meaning. Facts are facts, I've never seen a group of straight white guy parades saying "gosh this affirmative action is limiting us".

In fact why should the Dolphins be rewarded for failing? NE played 16 games just like everybody else. Why should they get penalized just because the Dolphins stunk.. If they lost, they lost. Right? Ah but you see, even in sports, where every team starts out equal (0-0), they strive for parody. When "parody" is exactly when each team is striving against!! Yet, the prevailing logic is to try to put rules in place to achieve some sort of parody. Some sort of level playing field. So each team can at least feel like that have an equal shot.. But in real life, oh no, that's a problem. Like this ideal is something new. By the way, I didn't think you had a deeper meaning. My first sentence acknowledged that I believed you were making a joke. I, personally, didn't find the joke funny. Although I acknowledged again, some others might.. |

Wow, amazing....so every white guy born owes something for the actions of the past...wonderful view point. I guess I missed the day in school when all the white boys went off to a special class to learn how to succeed and fend for themselves.
It's the type of "you have it better" mentality that his this country so screwed up. People thinking they got a 'bad deal' and that the masses now owe them something. To get back on topic, the government is correct in giving homosexuals the same legal rights as everyone else. Do I think this will stop the constant barrage of "recognize me, I have it harder then you"...most likely not. |

Uh, forget about the gay issue but do you really watch and understand football? Thats business for god's sake. They want the team to turn around the next few seasons with these higher picks, that way they could keep the business. Sigh.

It must be that this is what you personally think that anyone who supports Affirmative Action must feel about "white guys" before you even read my post... Fortunately there are people, like myself, who don't believe that. I am more towards the NFL model, in limited fashion, for any cause. Racial or otherwise. Affirmative Action deals with race, but every tip of the scale, in any human, economic situation, can cause a contrary action to try to balance out. Sometimes it is natural (one leg it hurts so you lean on the other more for support) and other times it is forced (raising and lowering interest rates depending on what is needed)... All I am trying to show you is that this type of over-compensation occurs in everything we do in nature and life. Everything.. Affirmative Action, as a concept, is not new. Now are you against that contrary action or the amount of the opposing action? They are two different arguments. Not sure which one you are arguing with wide sweeping statements like the one above. Let's even go to revenue sharing. Even amongst team owners this practice, although beneficial in my opinion, was disputed. The Cowboys were one of those teams that were opposed to revenue sharing. The Packers and others were for it. But it has been great for football as a whole... The point is not football per se, it is the economic ideal that when all are on a more even footing, it is beneficial for the group as a whole. Getting back to the gay issue. Or just the issue of rights. Giving people an equal playing field, gay rights, racial rights, women's rights is, in my opinion, good for the business. Social, economic, political and human business..
