Lowers the entry point. Good for younger, upwardly mobile folks who you want to attract to the brand so they will buy progressively more expensive cars. The X1 driver may be the future buyer of your E70 when you transition into the next model.

The entry point should be high for a BMW. These new models (x1/1 series) do nothing but reduce the brand and exclusivity of a BMW... or what's left of it! A BMW at every street corner with a teenager behind the wheel is not something I'm looking forward too. IMO the 3 is a perfect entry BMW, anything less is just a plain cheap BMW. Just my opinion...
