Arrow F3 test mule at Nürburgring

NURBURG, Germany — A new BMW test mule has hit the Nürburgring, and it may be the first sign that BMW's long-rumored V Series crossover is in development.

Although Mercedes-Benz hasn't exactly enjoyed overwhelming success with its R-Class crossover, that doesn't seem to be deterring BMW from getting into the game.

Based on a modified BMW 3 Series Sport Wagon body, this prototype looks far more car-based than a previous mule we spotted for the next-generation BMW X3. The X3 mule had a tall off-road ride height, while this latest mule sits much lower. A cross between a traditional wagon and a sport-utility, the BMW V Series is ultimately expected to offer three rows of seats in a boxy, yet non-minivan-like body.

This prototype's unique front bumper may have some BMW M3 overtones, but its overall design appears to be original.

What this means to you: Let's hope BMW can keep the V Series from treading too far into minivan territory.

that is the beauty of marketing, it fools most people!

crossovers have been around for awhile. here are some other names you may recognize:

station wagon, minivan, SUV (4x4), 'touring' models, and now crossovers!

Exactly!!! Just like Toyota created a new name for their car called "Lexus" to make people think it's different so they can jack-up the prices meanwhile it's still freaking TOYOTA... Same goes to other Japanese car company.

crossover, isn't that a station wagon?

BMW engineers need to back away from the pipe.

Guess these were ahead of their time as 'crossovers'

Great, so this is a photo of the Merc that BMW is setting it's sights after with this new V-Series. Awesome, sign me up . This is BMW jumping into another pointless segment to dilute the brand. Maybe it is just me, but I don't think BMW needs to create a model for every single person in the world.

Not quite. BMW has said already that F5 will be nowhere close to R-class, which looks like hearse.

F5 PAS vs. R-class
PAS will be 10 cm lower
PAS will be at least 100kg lighter
PAS will be a bit shorter (5 - 10 cm = 2 - 4 inches)

Good to hear, but it will still be hard for them to make cool looking vehicle for this segment. I will be surprised if I actually get excited about it and have a desire to ever drive it. I am afraid we are getting to the point where BMW is going to start making cars that I would never want to drive and that don't excite me in the least bit. That bothers me a little.
