Does the ignition need to be ON? engine running? for the iPod to charge?

What I really want to know is: If I leave the iPod in the parked X5, will it charge the iPod?

The iPod will charge while in play and turn off when the ignition is cut in order to eliminate the chance of battery drain on your X5.
