No sound from TV/Radio Headunit 2002 X5

Hi any help with this problem greatly appreciated.
Yesterday evening I started my car, the radio/tv headunit lit up as normal but no sound at all. I tried to select a different source i.e. CD changer but pressing the button done nothing. None of the buttons appear to work on the left hand side of the headunit on the right side everything works except the tone button.
I changed the BM54 radio module located in the spare wheel well about 8 months ago, as the last unit only had sound working on the drivers side speakers.
Here is a strange one..... the headunit started opening and closing about 2 months ago by itself whilst I was driving and this lasted for about 1 hour. I could hear the motor gears grinding as it kept trying to open itself even though it was already fully open. After parking the car for about 2 hours the problem went away

It seams like that in 90% of missing audio cases it is the radio module that neads to be rebooted.
You can just remove fuse for a while, that will do the same trick

I had exactly the same problem as clubscene last week.

I went to disconnect the amp under the spare wheel as he suggested but some further online research suggests that the amp is actually under the DVD ROM drive on the left had side of the boot. It's apparently the radio tuner module that's under the spare wheel.

Anyway, to cut long story short I disconnected 30amp fuse No 72 on right hand side of the boot and replaced it and all is well!

Everything back working with sound (TV Sat Nav, Bluetooth & Radio) and no settings lost

Amp is under the DVD, Radio tuner is under the spare wheel

I also have a similar problem with audio intermittently not working on my 2001 X5 with 16:9 nav/radio. Could anyone be a bit clearer as to what i should check please. The unit functions and screen/steering wheel buttons all remain working fine, just sound will go and then return ramdomly!!
