Having spoken to my friendly BMW garage I am told I can get the necessary bits to add VR to my set-up for £146.46 inc VAT (can't/won't give me part numbers and/or advice re fitting times and whether any coding is necessary). This would be a special order from Germany ~1 week - 10 days leadtime.
I was also told that a 84.10.9.154.358 latest generation ULF would be £268.21 inc VAT. Available next-day.
Having just missed out on a 12th generation ULF on eBay this week which went for £205, a new one looks good value.
My gut feeling is to go for the ULF as it'll be the latest version and so offer best performance and be more likely to upload by iPhone 3G's phone book etc - but equally I fancy achieving what I want and saving £100+!
So... what do you chaps think?
Should I add VR to the TCU I've got or replace it with a ULF? (and in each case, would the process be straight forward and "plug and play")?

Prices seem a bit cheap from a stealer to be honest.
When I queried on my E46 about upgrading my BT ULF, I was quoted over £400 + VAT; luckily it failed under warranty and I got a newer gen one.
As for VR, when I bought the E83, I was dismayed to find no VR even though it had BT. I got a quote from the dealer who claimed that to retrofit VR required a part (SES Module, which is clearly wrong as there isn't the connector for it), and they wanted £595 + VAT PLUS the fitting and coding cost

When I pointed out that there was no facility to fit a seperate SES module and all that was needed was coding, they just weren't interested in progressing it further.
Navcoder was a godsend, despite the dealer uncoding VR now 3 times after the car was in for work!
Anyhow, I suggest getting a firm QUOTATION from the dealer as they may try it on when you get the bill.
