just a thought, we do not travel around with our tank much more than half full, although we have come across this from time to time. Generally it is the refueller being very sensitive to the back pressure and depending on what angle you hold the nozzle will dictate how much air can escape quickly. Have found that when we go to a petrol station like that just changing the angle seems to solve it.

Have heard of faulty restrictors on 5 series but never an X5. You might like to check the E60 board if you find that the problem persists with all refueling...
