Good article, MD, thanks for posting.
I am one of the few people I know who talk about the theories behind peak oil. I fear that we will continue along in denial, living beyond our energy means (as the article puts it), until we end up in crisis. There is no leadership, political will, or desire to put this on the public agenda on the part of the general population of the US and Canada. Too bad, because the consequences, as they arrive over the coming years, will be a lot worse due to the lack of planning.
Sample data point: diesels could help us reduce our vehicle energy consumption. But diesels are being touted by reviewers and board members as a cure-all, something that will 'fix' the problem. The problem is that we are driving large, heavy, inefficient vehicles. Diesel or gasoline isn't the issue. Where are the 120d models, the X3 2.0d models, and so on? Instead, we join in the race for 400 and 500 hp SUVs. We will know we are making progress when the X6 is considered socially unacceptable, much as a Hummer H2 is in the UK now. It will take a few years.
