And for the hockey players in the crowd, I've also used "like a hockey stick in a trash can", since we've often used the large garbage can as a place to put our sticks in the locker room. Or alternatively, "a broomstick in a trash can". Still love the visual of someone tossing a hotdog down a hallway though.
